Drammen start with away win
«Go back »Print Version

The Norwegians start their first CL adventure since 1998 with an away win over Polish champions, Interferie Zaglebie Lubin.

Drammen start with away win

In front of 2,500 spectators in the Glogow Sports Hall in Poland, Drammen win by one goal, 32-31. Lubin still had a two-goal advantage at half time.

Gjekstad believes that going for the third place would be the realityThe final minutes of the match were just as intense and exciting as the result indicates. After an equal first half, the largest difference of the game came early in the second half when Lubin were leading by three goals at 17-14.

Intense end game

Drammen managed to catch up, however, and equalised at 21-21. At 25-24 Drammen took the lead for the first time after the break. There was less than a minute to go when Olav Hovind made it 32-30 for the Norwegians. There was no more doubt about the winner any more, and even though the home team managed to come back to one goal once again, the visitors could celebrate a win. These two points will be useful with BM Ciudad Real and SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the group…

“Realistically, we should be satisfied with a third place in our group, and therefore this win was an extremely important result,” Drammen’s coach Ole Gustav Gjekstad told Norwegian internet magazine, Nettavisen.

Veteran and former Norwegian international Frode Hagen were Drammen’s top scorers with 8 goals. Michael Kubisztal scored 10 for Zaglebie Lubin.

Ciudad Real are leading Group G with Drammen in second position. Next Saturday, 6 October, Flensburg will travel to Drammenshallen.
