Annual Mpeg publications on the internet

As a continuation of the project that the MC started last year, three more video clips have been produced this year for the internet. You can find the videos on the Handball 4 all website domain of Eurohandball.com.
The project is planned to continue until 2010.

The three tasks in the focus are:

Minihandball – playing small games
Basic Handball – defence
Beach Handball

This year’s edition covers the alternative games for mini handballers, basic individual defence in specific positions and in small groups. Regarding beach handball, the focus is on goalkeeping and substitution strategy.

Since the videos are without commentary, you can find a short summary below.

Alternative Small Games

Video: Freesbie and Alternative Games

The following basic rules apply to all the games:

  • No physical contact is allowed
  • Only a free ball or Frisbee disc can be tackled
  • When the ball or disc drops on the floor the defending team gains possession.

Besides this the regular team handball rules apply.

1.Falcon

Groups of 4 or 5 players form a triangle or a square respectively with one player in the middle. A frisbee disc is passed around as the player in the middle tries to get the frisbee or force the others to drop it. In such cases, the player who made the mistake becomes the defender.

Idea:

  • Quick movements and use of arms, legs to provoke mistakes.
  • Play with total focus on the disc.

2. Two falcons

Similar game played by 6 people against 2 or 5 against 2 with two discs.

Idea: The attacking players have to keep an eye on both discs at the same time and adjust to the different characteristics of the discs they have to catch and throw.

The defending players have to cooperate and work as a team.

3. Frisbee ultimate

Two teams of 4 or 5 players shall pass the disc from one to the other and thus take the disc into the end zone. Passing the disc to a player in the zone is a goal. With every goal the ends change and the restart of the game is done through a long distance pass of the successful team from zone to zone.

Idea: As passing is only allowed in a standing position, the teammates of the disc carrier have to run without the disc possession to be able to get a pass.

Defence must be man-to-man defence but without body contact. The defensive movements have to be aimed at the disc.

4. Line-ball

The ball version of the previous game.
It is recommended to play the game with the ball applying the centre-line rule. This means that a team can only score when the complete team crossed the middle line. If this happens fast enough and a defending player remains behind the line, the team can score two points.

Idea: The full team has to run and play defence as well as offence. No specialists.

5. Goal Frisbee

Goal is achieved by throwing the disc into a small goal from the zone line.

6. Mat-score

A goal is scored by passing to a teammate standing on a mat. Two scoring zones available per team.

Idea: Move the focus of the game from side to side according to the reaction of the defending team.

Individual defence and defence in small groups

Video: Defence Training Small Groups

This video goes through several basic defence techniques step by step.

The wing defender shall always turn his chest towards the ball. It requires constant switching of the front leg.

In the cooperation of wing + half in defence the clip shows clearly the difference in the legwork of the players in these two positions. The area covered by the half is much larger, the work of the wing is more static.

The 1 on 1 work with the line player is very specific. It is of vital importance to find a position sideways from the line player that will allow cutting passes to him. This position of course cannot be achieved all the time in every situation but it should be the ultimate target.

The first drill of defence in groups demonstrates armwork against the ball only. The defence must not cross the 9m line. Passes to the static pivot shall be blocked. Successful blocking gives one point for the defence, if the control over the ball can be gained, the score will be two points. A completed pass to the pivot gives two points to the offence.

In the second drill the defence player off the ball is allowed to enter the free throw zone giving a closer coverage against the pass. This drill means more running for the defence.

In the next drill a direct opponent covering the pivot is added creating a 4-4 situation.

The final drill gives a combination of defending against the pass to the line player and at the same time blocking attempts to penetrate the zone after give and go by the attackers.

The offensive team will achieve a point for every successful penetration and two points for every completed pass to the pivot.

The defence will gain one point for blocking either the ball or the attempt of penetration and two points for bringing the ball under control.

Beach handball

Video: Goalkeeper Skills and Substitutions Strategies

A series of scenes from the last ECh and methodic drills on indoor court is presented to demonstrate preparation and training for playing on sand.

The focus of the clip is offensive work of the goalkeepers and basic strategies for substitution.

The first part includes several drills for the goalkeeper preparing direct shots after a clean save or the follow up with direct shot after a rebound.
