Denmark’s best: Popovic and Hansen

Viborg’s Bojana Popovic was awarded Female Handball Player of the Year 2008 in Denmark. The award for the men went to Mikkel Hansen, former GOG Svendborg, current FC Barcelona player. The awards were announced at a gala party in Herning over the past weekend.

These annual awards are decided by voting. All Danish league players and foreign players were invited to cast their votes.

The 29-year old Montenegrin international took the women’s award for the third time. This year she was the best in front of her team mate Henriette Mikkelsen and Norwegian goalkeeper Cecilie Leganger (FCK Håndbold).

“Each time I get such an award, it makes me feel even more responsible. I want to prove that I can become even better and prove that they made the right choice. It gives me motivation to improve further,” Bojana Popovic said after getting the award.

Extremely proud

Mikkel Hansen took the honour in front of his team mate in Barcelona, Kasper Hvidt and Lars Christiansen (SG Flensburg Handewitt).

“I’m extremely proud to be Player of the Year. It proves me that I’m doing daily the right things day by day and that my colleagues agree with it,” said the 21-year old Mikkel Hansen, who played 22 internationals for Denmark. Hansen is also member of the Danish squad at the World championship in Croatia.

The awards, given for the 12th time, have been presented by the Danish Handball Players´ Union.
