Gummersbach victory closes EC season

Celebration after 26 yearsAlmost 15,000 fans have witnessed the moment when the Gummersbach captain Momir Ilic took the trophy over after 26 years of title draught. The EHF Cup went to the Germans after a 26:22 victory over RK Gorenje from Slovenia.

The team of coach Sead Hasanefendic virtually ran over the Slovenians in the first half. Though Gorenje tried to catch up after the break and proved their exceptional qualities and team spirit by coming back to only four goals, the EHF Cup title of Gummersbach was never in danger.

Ilic and Zrnic were leading the score for the hosts by seven goals; Bezjak and Doblesek were the most prolific on the Slovenian side by five.

The medals were handed over by German national coach Heiner Brand who was member of the team that won the last European Cup title for the team in 1983.
