Denmark take the W17 Championship Title in Style

The 2009 Women’s 17 European Championship took place in Serbia from the 25th June – 5th July. Fifty-six matches were played in the sport halls of Nis and Vrnjacka Banja. The competition came to an end on Sunday in a final between Denmark and Russia in front of 1000 spectators. With the final whistle the national team of Denmark defeated Russia to take the championship title in the third edition of the Women’s 17 European Championship. Goalkeepers Cecilie Greve from Denmark and Daria Vakhterova from Russia were named the best players of the match.

In the medal match Norway defeated former champions France to take third place. When the competition relaunched, Denmark took the title in 2005, France won in 2007 and now once again in 2009, the title will return to Denmark until the next edition of the tournament. The top eight ranked teams in the final standings will proceed to the Women’s U18 World Championship (IHF Event) taking place in the Dominican Republic from 28.07.–08.08.2010. Denmark has directly qualified for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore to be held from the 14th - 26th August 2010.

The two best ranked teams have automatically qualified for the Women’s 19 European Championship taking place in the Netherlands from 4th – 14th August 2011. The EHF would express their thanks to the National Federation of Serbia, who managed to successfully organise the competition within 10 weeks.
