Vienna hosted the 2009 EHF Top Referee Seminar.

EHF referees prepare for new season

The circle of EHF top and potential top referees spent the past weekend in Vienna. The 2009 EHF Top Referee Seminar was attended by a total of 55 match officials who listened to lecturers preparing them for the new season.

CC Chairman, Jan Tuik, is confident that this weekend reached its objectives:

Professional testing for the referees“This was the first time that a preparation seminar took place for the referees before the launch of a season. Top referees and the potential top referees came together, which was also a first step in the preparation for the EHF EURO 2010 in Austria.

“We had problem cases during the last season that needed to be confronted. The company g-partner is working very seriously for the EHF right and we welcomed Mr. Grimstad for the seminar. The representative of g-partner gave a summary of the activities in these areas for the referees. This was an important occasion as we try to prepare them to be aware of possible attempts of undue influence during their job.

“Another external lecturer, Mr Bouwer, was a great asset for us as well. After working as handball national coach, he is currently dealing with Dutch football referees. He talked about a good mental approach when facing difficult situations. The referees have to know that there are other important factors in their job than just knowing the rules of the game…

“A physical test was also carried out in order to assess the level of preparation of this group. In general I can say that there are no problems with the fitness of European top referees,” Jan Tuik summarised.

The top referees will be active at the most demanding matches of the 2009/10 national team and club season including the flagship competitions, EHF EURO and EHF Champions League.
