Fresh impetus for referee education

The European Handball Federation held the 2010 EHF Referee Education Workshop on 2-4 July in Vienna. The event with a focus on national level referee education was organised by the EHF Competence Academy & Network on the initiative of the EHF Technical Refereeing Committee and the EHF Competitions Commission.

Altogether 75 participants from 45 EHF Member Federations arrived in Vienna including chiefs of referees, education responsible persons.

The workshop featured an incentive keynote speech by Miguel Betancor, FIBA Europe chief of referees. The Spanish basketball refeeeing expert presented a number of IT-based game administration and education solutions commonly applied in European basketball. The electronic scoresheet, video platform or referee website proved to be highly interesting for the colleagues from handball.

In the following part, EHF chief of refereeing, Sándor Andorka, explained the IHF Rule changes effective as of 1 July.

Following the discussion about the rules, the Young Referee Project (YRP) coordinator Henrik La Cour Laursen took the floor. An interactive workshop on National Referee Education, Quality Criteria and EHF Support followed.

The meeting - in addition to an effective exchange of ideas - brought a number of lasting results in the area of national level referee education. Among others these are:

  • Adopting the YRP inside the National Federations (EHF lecturers, IT based EHF teaching tools, equipment supply, more tournaments for YRP, etc.),
  • Adopting the Delegate System in the National Federations within the YRP,
  • Individual approaches to find more female referees within the YRP in the National Federations with support and follow-up by EHF,
  • Further development of IT-based teaching tools to be used by National Federtions,
  • EHF further training concept for EHF referees and delegates,
  • Regular and intensified contact/feedback between EHF and National Federation concerning YRP, women referees and referee education.
