On 19 December 2010 a Round Table event took place in Herning.

Women’s Handball Promotion

On the final day of Women’s EHF EURO 2010 in Denmark and Norway, a Round Table event for Women’s Handball Promotion took place on 19 December 2010 in Herning.

Among the 45 participants – representing 21 nations – were also the EHF leadership including President Tor Lian, Vice President Jean Brihault and Secretary General Michael Wiederer as well as IHF Vice President Miguel Roca.

Key note speaker of the Round Table was Marit Breivik (NOR), who held a presentation about best practice scenarios from her experience within Norwegian handball.

Breivik presented her four aspects of the development of Women’s handball:

  1. The national federations should give equal rights to men’s and women’s handball, in terms of providing the same resources to both sides.
  2. Women’s handball should be linked to top level sports, which implies a focus on developing players and coaches in order to raise the playing level as well as individual strength.
  3. Resources must be provided for the development of players, time reserved for that should be considered as a key factor and shall be cleverly split up between club activities, individual activities, central activities (national team) and regional activities.
  4. Women’s handball shall grow to a worldwide sport, the top level shall consist of more nations, especially from out of Europe.

After EHF Vice President Jean Brihault gave a summary of objectives of the EHF Women’s Competitions Conference in Odense (DEN), a panel discussion gave the National Federations a possibility to contribute.

The ideas will now be accumulated and evaluated and become agenda points on the next meeting of the EHF Executive Committee in the end of January 2011 at the occasion of the final weekend of the 2011 Men’s World Handball Championship.
