Spain and Slovakia through to EHF EURO 2012
«Go back »Print Version

The eighth and ninth teams have qualified for EHF EURO 2012 – five places are still open before the last round.

The Qualification Groups 2 and 4 are decided following the matches of Thursday evening, with Spain and Slovakia booking their tickets to Serbia with away victories.

Group 2

Lithuania – Spain 16:25 (6:11)

Thanks to the direct encounter with two victories over their opponents, Spain have reached EHF EURO 2012.

Even if the Iberians lose on Sunday against Romania, and Lithuania win at Croatia (which would mean both are equal with six points) the Spaniards cannot be overtaken anymore.

Spain dominated the throughout the whole 60 minutes in Vilnius.

Initially their defence stood strong. After the break the Lithuanians did not have the means to stop the Spanish counter attacks.

Top scorer was Roberto Garcia with six goals. Drevinskas scored four times for the host, who remain on four points, two points behind the Iberians.

So the Group is already completely decided as the Group winners from Croatia already qualified after Round 4. The Croats will be seeded in Pot 1 in the draw on Wednesday, Spain will be in Pot 2.

Group 4

Israel – Slovakia 27:31 (12:16)

Group 4 is also decided; almost. Following Sweden's qualification for the EHF EURO on Wednesday, the Slovaks followed them to Serbia and will participate at a EURO for the third time after 2006 and 2008.

Both Sweden and Slovakia are equal with eight points currently after each four victories – and both are favoured in their final matches on Sunday. If both remain equal, Sweden win the Group thanks to the direct encounter (26:21, 21:23).

Despite the eight goals of Pomeranz and seven goals from Smoler, Israel could not take their second victory.

The Slovaks started brilliantly (11:5), before the hosts caught up to 11:13. Even in the second half it took until the final stage before the Slovaks decided the game at 25:20 after Israel were close to turning the match at 20:22.

Top scorer for the Slovaks was Stranowsky with six goals.
