Alexander Toncourt passes away

It is with great sadness that the EHF has to report the passing away of Alexander Toncourt, Assistant Secretary General of the European Handball Federation in his home city of Vienna.

Ali, as he was better known to his friends and colleagues, joined the EHF in 1994 as Assistant Secretary General and had previously held the post of Secretary General of the Austrian Handball Federation.

He began his long career in international handball as a player in the Austrian first division. His active playing career continued through to playing in the European Masters Championship.

Ali’s passion for handball was also reflected in his professional career, in his work for the European Handball Federation, as a member of the International Handball Federation’s Commission of Organising and Competitions (COC) from 2000 to 2008 and as a technical delegate at World Championships.

Tor Lian, EHF President, said: “I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Ali’s passing away. Ali was a true professional, a trusted leader in the handball world and also a good friend. He will be greatly missed.”

Michael Wiederer, EHF Secretary General said, “The news of Ali’s death has come as a great shock despite his battle with illness. He has been a trusted colleague and close friend for many years and his passing away is a huge personal loss."

The European Handball Federation, together with Ali’s friends and colleagues in the EHF Office in Vienna, would like to convey their deepest condolences to Ali’s wife, Ingrid, and his family and friends at this difficult time.
