Lada win Women's EHF Cup

HC Lada from Russia became the first EHF European Cup winners of the 2011/12 season with a 51:44 aggregate win over Romanian side H.C. Zalau in the Women's EHF Cup.

The Russians defeated Zalau in the Antonio Alexa Hall in Oradea, Romania today (Saturday 12th May) 21:20, which, added to their 30:24 victory of their Romanian counterparts last Saturday (5th May), meant they took the tie by seven goals.

The hosts had hoped for about 35 minutes that they could surprise and turn the table against their Russian counterparts Lada Togliatti, but the physical strength of the away side decided the match in favour of the Russians.

Despite a six-goal deficit after the first leg, Gheorghe Tadici's girls never ceased to believe in their ability to change their fate. The Arena in the city of Oradea was 'on fire' during the whole match, with fans from all over Romania coming to support Zalau.

The hosts produced a rock-solid defence in the first period, with a top quality goalkeeper between the sticks, and so Tadici's team exerted high pressure on their opponents.

Zalau were ahead by 3-4 goals during the first half, but in the second period the Russians fought back hard and showed their strength in attack.

Evgeny Trefilov's team had the longer bench and this certainly made the difference between the two teams, allowing Lada to also win the second encounter, this time, narrowly, by 21:20.
