Flensburg take the title from Gummersbach

Big party in Flensburg: After winning the first leg of the Cup Winners’ Cup final 34:33 at defending champions VfL Gummersbach the Northern German secured their first international and national title since 2005 by a clear 32:28 (16:11) victory in the re-match on home ground – eleven years after they had won this trophy for the last time.

Flensburg was dominant in the whole 60 minutes and had broken the resistance of the guest in the beginning of the second half. “I am so proud on this team and now we will have a real big celebration,” Flensburg coach Ljubomir Vranjes said.

Gummersbach coach Emir Kurtagic congratulated their successor as Cup Winners’ Cup winner: “Flensburg had beaten us four times in this season, so they are a well-deserved winner of this European competition.”

Match winner for the new champion was goalkeeper Mattias Andersson with an incredible number of 23 saves. Aside Petar Djordjic was the key factor for the initial 10:7 lead, which was extended to 15:11 at the break.

The last time Gummersbach was close was at the score of 23:25, then the Flensburg machine had started. Latest at the 31:25 the game and the final series were decided. Top scorers were Djordjic with eight goals for Flensburg and superb youngster Kentin Mahe with nine goals for the dethroned champions.
