Rnic: Göppingen ready to move forward

Frisch Auf Göppingen is not a club that would strike fear into the hearts of Europe’s top teams but the fast-improving German side has every chance of breaking into the continent’s elite in due course, their Serbian left back Momir Rnic spoke to eurohandball.com in an exclusive interview.

The versatile 24-year old is geared for Serbia’s preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games, he also spoke about a wonderful season in which he was at the heart of Göppingen’s second successive triumph in the EHF Cup.

VELUX EHF Champions League dreams for Göppingen

He also mentioned how comfortable he felt in this team which is invariably drawing a full house for their home games and their ambitions to break into the VELUX EHF Champions League in a fiercely competitive environment.

“Göppingen is a well-organised club with a great atmosphere, the staff are totally committed and the new signings due to arrive during the summer break, including my compatriot Bojan Beljanski, should make us a formidable side next season too,” Rnic said.

“We have been trying to get into the Champions League for some tine now but breaking into the top four clubs in Germany is not easy because the Bundesliga is the toughest competition in the world,” he pointed out.

One step at a time

Rnic, a towering sharpshooter, able to play either as left back or center back, underlined that Göppingen would have to take it one step at a time.

“Clubs like Kiel, Hamburg, Flensburg, Berlin and Rhein-Neckar Löwen are hard acts to follow and for the time being we are satisfied that we have moved up a rank by qualifying for the European Cup, having won the EHF Cup twice in a row,” he said.

“We have a good team, our coach knows what he is doing and hopefully we will also be able to climb up the ladder in the Bundesliga so that we can come into the reckoning for a Champions League berth.”

Rnic and Petkovic working well together

In conclusion, Rnic underscored just how much he has improved since joining Göppingen last season and how gratifying it is to play in the German league, widely regarded as the best in the world.

“I feel I have matured as a player next to my coach Velimir Petkovic, who showed so much faith in me throughout the season.

Playing in the world’s toughest national league has honed my skills because there is no better environment to improve as a player. It has been a dream come true for me and I will do my best to keep the dream alive for as long as I can,” said Rnic.
