Mikkel Hansen goes to Paris

The world´s best handball player Mikkel Hansen is going to spend the next four years of his handball life in Paris.

The 24 year old left back, who was officially named World Handball Player of the Year 2011, has signed a contract valid until the summer of 2016 with the ambitious French club Paris Saint Germain Handball.

Last season, the team from the French capital ended in thirteenth position in their national league so there will be no European adventure for the Danish international this year.

However, through the signings of world stars such as Luc Abalo, Mark Kopljar, Robert Gunnarsson and now Mikkel Hansen, Paris Saint Germain expect to play a much more important role in French and European handball in the future.

“I would like to be part of building something big and that seems to be possible in Paris, where we are getting an extremely fine team this season,” Mikkel Hansen told the Danish TV station TV 2, as the contract was announced.

"We can win the Champions League"

Mikkel Hansen, who played an important part in Denmark's successful EHF EURO 2012 campaign in January in Serbia, started his professional career in Danish GOG before moving on to FC Barcelona in 2008.

After two years in Spain he returned home to play for AG København who were newcomers in the Danish league at that time. After having won the Danish championship and the Danish cup with the Copenhagen side in 2011 as well as in 2012, Hansen could choose among offers from European top clubs, when AG went bankrupt on 31 July.

“A billion clubs want me!” he exclaimed with a laugh. From that “billion” he chose Paris Saint Germain.

“We have a team that can play for the French championship, and of course I would like to win the French league – but I would certainly also like to win the Champions League, and I think that is possible with Paris,” Mikkel Hansen said.
