FC Midtjylland take Danish Cup

FCM Håndbold are ready for another European adventure after defeating KIF Vejen 28:21 in the Danish Cup final.

FC Midtjylland Håndbold had two chances to qualify for Europe next season, already before the Danish Cup final Saturday. They still have the chance to win the EHF Cup this season, where they are facing RK CEN-I-Zagorje from Slovenia in the Last 16, and being on top of the Danish league they also have the opportunity to qualify for the Women´s EHF Champions League. However, after Saturday evening´s seven goal win against Cup Winners´ Cup finalists from 2010, KIF Vejen, FCM are sure to be at least part of the Cup Winners´ Cup against next season.

The teams had agreed to play the match on FCM´s home ground in the Ikast Brande Arena in order to attract as many spectators as possible, and that idea turned out to be a success, as the hall was full with 2,520 spectators - and as KIF Vejen had arranged free busses for their fans, several hundred KIF fans were supporting their heroines loudly throughout the 60 minutes.

FCM got the far better start and got ahead 4:0, while it took KIF Vejen nine minutes and 51 seconds to score their first goal. Still the first half got fairly even, but FCM were still leading by two, 14:12, at half time.

In the second half, however, FCM, who won the EHF Cup in 2002 and the Cup Winners´ Cup in 2004 under the name Ikast Brande EH, did not leave any doubt as to which team were the stronger. Via 19:14 the home team got eight goals up at 23:15, and the last bit of doubt about the outcome was long gone. At the end FC Midtjylland could book their first Cup win in nine years through the 28:21 win.

Louise Spelleberg, line player, FCM Håndbold: “I joined FC Midtjylland to win titles, and I am so happy having won my first title ever today. A part of my heart is crying also, though, as the win was against my former club, but happiness is the far dominating feeling inside me right now.”

Susanne Kastrup Forslund, left winger, KIF Vejen: ”A big congratulations to FCM who were far better than us in all aspects of the game tonight. However, after a turbulent season last year, where we were only one seven meter shot from being relegated, we are happy to have improved a lot this season, and we are extremely proud of our silver medal.”
