Quarter-finals review of the Women´s EHF Cup

After Romania´s HC Zalau sealed their semi-finals progression in the Women´s EHF Cup through Spanish Grupo Asfi Itxako Navarra over the first weekend of the quarter-finals three more teams completed the list of the top four.

On the way to the final double-header of the competition Zalau will take on France´s Metz Handball and FC Midtjylland lock horns with their Danish compatriots Team Tvis Holstebro.

The first leg of the semi-finals will be played 6/7 April on the courts of Metz and Midtjylland, the second leg is scheduled for the following weekend as Zalau and Holstebro will play hosts.

Tertnes Bergen (NOR) vs Team Tvis Holstebro (DEN) 33:30 (16:15)
First leg: 29:36

Norwegian hosts have became the first team in the current European season who managed to beat Holstebro, but their win by three goals was not enough to stop the top scoring team of the competition who reached the 30-goal plateau in the seventh out of eight matches in their successful campaign.

The shooting duel between Marie Liljegren and Ann Grete Nørgaard saw a stalemate as both players netted in ten times, but the tally of the Danish international (57) can still grow in the next round.

HC Kuban Krasnodar (RUS) vs FC Midtjylland (DEN) 22:26 (13:12)
First leg: 21:39

After an 18 -goal drubbing in Denmark the Russian side hired the new head coach, but even the winner of the last year´s edition with Lada Togliatti and the former coach of the national team Yevgeniy Trefilov could not prevent Kuban from the elimination.

The hosts held the upper hand only during the first half, after the break the top ranked team of the Danish league took over the lead.

Metz Handball (FRA) vs Astrakhanochka (RUS) 33:19 (17:9)
First leg: 19:26

For the fifth time in their rich European history Metz have reached the semi-finals stage. In front of the crowd of 5000 in the “Les Arenes” the home team challenged the seven-goal deficit from the first leg since the opening throw-off and they erased the gap even before the half-time break. Their smooth run to the semi-finals was never really threatened by visitors from Russia.

"You should always believe in yourself. With a hard work and a maximum of will, we knew that anything is possible in handball. From the beginning to the end we were in control of this match. There is nothing what we can lose now and we will see how far will this adventure take us. Why not to the EHF Cup trophy," the Dutch winger Ailly Luciano said for the official website of the French league leaders.

The next hurdle of Metz on the way to their first ever European final are last season´s finalists from Zalau.
