Germany face Czech Republic without Glandorf and Kaufmann

Head coach Heuberger trusts the same players that reached the quarter-finals at the 2013 World Championship

Germany face Czech Republic without Glandorf and Kaufmann

Germany’s men’s head coach Martin Heuberger continues his way of transition.

After finishing fifth at the 2013 World Championship with a young German team and another two test victories against Switzerland at the start of March with an even younger team, he has now nominated exactly the same squad, in which he had already put his trust in Spain, for the crucial EHF EURO 2014 qualification matches against Czech Republic (4 and 7 April).

This means that the two 2007 world champions, Holger Glandorf and Lars Kaufmann (both playing for VELUX EHF Champions League team SG Flensburg-Handewitt), are still being left out.

“I trust the players who have been successful at the World Championship in Spain,” Heuberger was quoted on the German Handball Federation’s website.

“Due to the high quality of our opponent, the significance of the matches and the short time to prepare I do not want to make experiments as this squad I nominated is well-rehearsed.”

The head coach also explained why the back court aces, Kaufmann and Glandorf, are not among the 16 players nominated.

“Due to his long-term injury Holger has not been in the national team for a year, Lars since June 2012. And I do not want to change the hierarchy which has grown during the World Championship in Spain.

“Those players, who have been in Spain, are the ones to take the responsibility.”

Heuberger had informed Glandorf as well as Kaufmann about his decision on the fringes of the Bundesliga top match Flensburg against Rhein Neckar Löwen on Wednesday

However: “Both are still in my focus for the national team,” Heuberger emphasised.

Germany will play the away match against Czech Republic in Brno on 4 April (17:00 hrs. local time) and the re-match at Halle/Westfalen on 7 April (14:20 hrs. local time).

The team is under pressure after their home defeat against Montenegro in the first round of the qualification.

Due to the fact that Montenegro are the favourites against Israel in the rounds 3 and 4, Germany might need to win both matches against the Czechs to secure qualification for the EHF EURO 2014 in Denmark without a rest of doubt.

But the circumstances before the crucial matches against Filip Jicha and his teammates are not perfect.

“We have only three training sessions before the match in Brno,” Heuberger said.

The Czech team also lost against Montenegro and beat Israel in the first two rounds of the qualifications and therefore also have two points on their account.

The German squad for the EHF EURO 2014 qualifiers against Czech Republic:

Left wing: Kevin Schmidt (HSG Wetzlar), Dominik Klein (THW Kiel)

Right wing: Tobias Reichmann (HSG Wetzlar), Patrick Groetzki (Rhein-Neckar Löwen)

Line player: Oliver Roggisch (Rhein-Neckar Löwen), Patrick Wiencek (THW Kiel) Christoph Theuerkauf (HBW Balingen-Weilstetten)
