Danish coach departs after EHF Cup elimination

Walther leaves Płock

The Board of Orlen Wisła Płock have accepted the resignation of coach Lars Walther following their failure to get to the quarter-finals of the EHF Cup, Andrzej Miszczyński, President of the Management Board, said at a press conference.

“The decision to cancel Lars Walther's contract was a mutual decision. It wasn't easy for me to make it,” said Miszczyński.

Płock failed to reach the quarter-finals after finishing third in Group C behind Holstebro and Maribor.

In last season's VELUX EHF Champions League, Walther had led the side into the Last 16 before THW Kiel knocked them out.

A former Danish international, Walther was appointed Orlen Wisła Płock coach in July 2010. He has won a Polish Championship, beating Vive Targi Kielce in the final of the 2010/11 season.

The Danish coach issued a special press statement in which he explained the reasons for his decision.

“I decided to put in my resignation due to the bad results in the last five weeks. I know that club’s budget is linked with the results so I want to give more space to Płock.

“I want to thank  the club, president, fans, sponsors and of course the team. I had three fantastic years here. My heart will always be in this city.

“I will truly hanker for this town which I will always keep close to my heart. Thank you all. I'm also convinced that during ongoing year the team will achieve all of their goals. I will regularly track the results of the team. I wish Plock many victories,” said Walther.

Assistant coach Krzysztof Kisiel has stepped up to be head coach in the wake of Lars Walther'’s departure.

“Krzysztof was part of the team during the last two year. I am sure that he ensues from the responsibilities,” concluded Miszczyński.
