Randers is ready and looking forward to hosting the 2013 European Beach Handball Championship. There are no tickets necessary as all matches can be watched for free

Randers ready to welcome beach handball fans from all across Europe

For Denmark´s sixth largest city with a population of just over 60,000 in the city centre and 96,000 including the suburbs, the final tournament is a large and important event.

"It means a lot to us, as we are striving to be known as a city which offers a lot of sports facilities.

"For instance, the city is building a 6,000 square metre-large swimming and wellness centre at the moment, and as many people know already, Randers is also known for the women´s top handball team Randers HK as well as for the football Superliga team Randers FC,” Anne-Mette Knattrup, head of the tourist office in Randers, 'Visit Randers', told eurohandball.com.

She makes no secret of the fact that hosting the championship is a big task for the city, but she emphasises that everything will be ready to receive the players, officials and fans when the event throws off from 9 to 14 July.

Prior to that date the eight Women's 19 and eight Men's 19 national teams will take to the sandy courts from 5 to 7 July as the prelude to the senoir's tournament.

"We have been really busy preparing for this event for the past couple of months, but as soon as it became a fact that Randers was going to host the event, we started informing the public about it through all the channels of information we have at our disposal, and the expectations are high here in Randers," added Knattrup, who promises all participants and fans a first hand service during the championship.

"Throughout the tournament we are going to have a satellite branch of our tourist office directly at the playing area Tronholmen, where people can get all the information and tourist service they want.

"We will also be renting out bikes to people who want to take a look at Randers and its surroundings," she explains.

Sailing with the 'Little Bear' or visiting Elvis' home

And there is a lot to look at for those who may want to take a break from the beach handball matches once in a while.

"As a special event for the championship, we a have boat, named the 'Little Bear' which takes people for a sailing sightseeing tour on Randers Fjord, and if you cross the bridge from the playing area, you will be in the historic centre of the city.

"There you can follow a route, where stars in the asphalt show the way to the sights of the city centre – small stars show the way, and big stars tell the story of the sight.

Among those is Randers Regnskov, an indoor tropical forest featuring plants and animals from rain forests in South America, Africa and Asia. Or how about taking a bike to Graceland, our Elvis Presley museum including an accurate copy of The King´s home in Memphis, Tennessee?

"We are ready and looking forward to giving all players, officials and fans a great time here in Randers," Anne-Mette Knattrup promised.
