Eight more teams ready for Round 3

After HB Dudelange from Luxembourg and Fram Reykjavik from Iceland had qualified already last weekend, eight more teams followed them this weekend. For Michelle Goos from Success Schhoonmaak/VOC Amsterdam, the weekend became extra special, as the 23-year-old winger scored no less than 15 goals, when she and her teammates defeated ZRK “Zrinski” Mostar 34:17 on Friday night in the first of this weekend´s two matches against the Bosnians.

On Saturday she was a little more modest with seven goals, when the Dutch won 29:13. The 63:30 aggregate win left no doubt which team was proceeding to the next round.

Liones from Croatia also had a rather quiet weekend, as DHW Antwerpen visited them in Samobor this weekend. Liones put the tie beyond doubt with a clear 37:20 win in the first leg, and leading 19:9 at half time in the second match Sunday, the hosts could take it just a bit easier in the second half, although they still won 29:18 and 66:38 on aggregate.

In Round 3, Lada from Russia who have celebrated quite a lot of triumphs in the EHF Champions League in the past will be waiting for the Croatians.

HC Gomel may have feared that their four goal lead from last weekend´s 24:20 home wing against ADA Colegio Joao de Barros would not be enough before their visit to Portugal for the return match this Saturday. Already at half time, though, the Belarusians were leading by another four goals, 14:10, and in the end Gomel gained a further win, this time 26:23 and booked the ticket for the third round through a 50:43 win on aggregate.

Before travelling to Lithuania, HC Karpaty might also have been a bit anxious about their 28:23 home win from the first leg against HC Zalgiris Kaunas. However, the matter was more or less decided already after the first half of the second leg, as the Ukrainians were leading 23:13. The final result was a huge 42:27 win for Karpaty who proceed to Round 3 with a total win of 70:50. Their next opponent will be the new Danish team København Håndbold with several Danish internationals.

Last season’s Challenge Cup winners DHK Banik Most have entered the EHF Cup with similar success so far. After they defeated Levanger HK 27:22 at home in the first match, left back Hana Martinkova´s nine goals played a great part in their 21:17 win in Norway. An overall win of 48:39 sends Most on to the third round where the next hurdle for the Angels will be Romanian side H.C. Zalau who reached the semi-final of the competition last season.

There was no doubt in Slovakia this weekend, when IUVENTA Michalovce and Israeli Bnei Hertzeliya played both legs of their tie. After a Slovakian 40:28 win Saturday, Michalovce won as big as 41:17 in the second leg, despite only leading 17:12 at half time. With a total score of 81:45, Michalovce can look forward the next challenge in the tournament.

Things were a bit more equal in Kosovo, where both matches between KHF Kastrioti and Belgian Handballl Femina Vise took place this weekend. However, 24 goals from right back Belma Beba were not enough to save the hosts from a 67:56 defeat over the two matches. Saturday, Beba scord 12 times, but still the visitors won 30:25, and another 12 goals from the right back the next day helped even less, as the Belgians won 37:31 this time.

HSC “Etar-64” Veliko Tarnovo´s 24:22 win at home in the first leg against A.C. PAOK proved to be far from enough, when the Bulgarians came to Thessaloniki. After a narrow 11:10 lead at half time, the Greeks increased the distance to a final score of 28:20 and an aggregate victory of 50:44 in the Mikras 3 (House of Handball).
