Five sides progress from Round 3 double headers

It was a weekend of comprehensive victories in the Women’s EHF Cup last weekend, as 12 of the 16 first leg games were completed and five second leg games the following day.

Big winners

Dinamo Volgograd were the biggest winners of the weekend, with two double-figure victories over LC Brühl giving them a 72:37 aggregate win. Last season’s Women’s EHF Champions League participants were lethal all over the court, with 14 different scorers in the first leg and 12 in the second.

TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen also managed two double-figure victories in their 81:55 win over Portuguese side Alavarium / Love Tiles. Despite putting up a bit of resistance in the first half of leg 1, with the half-time score at 16:22, Alavarium were never threatening enough and the Germans ended up with the highest total score from the weekend.

Romania’s U Jolidon Cluj coasted to a 71:53 win over A.C. PAOK from Greece as did Swedish club Skuru IK over Helvetia Bm. Alcobendas from Spain 73:61.

The only tight result came from Ankara, as Cankaya Bel. Anka Spor K. booked their spot in the Last 16 after a hard fought win over Handball Femina Vise.

It was looking good for the Belgians after a 24:22 win in the first leg and a one goal lead at half time in the second game, but driven by Czech Marta Krouska’s seven goals, the Turkish side won 29:22 and took an aggregate win of 51:46.

Difficulty for Challenge Cup finalists

Both of last season’s Challenge Cup finalists found the step up in level too much to handle as they lost their first leg ties by seven goals away from home over the weekend. Champions Banik Most lost out to HC Zalau 28:21 in Romania, while Samobor fared no better in Russia, losing to Lada 33:26.

New Danish side Kobenhavn Handbold were the only side to be successful away from home with a 22:17 victory over Ukraine’s HC Karpaty and they are looking good for a spot in the Last 16 if they can replicate their form at the Frederiksberg Hallen on Saturday 16 November.

Elsewhere, there were first leg victories for Rocasa Ace Gran Canaria (30:20 over HC Gomel), Astrakhanochka (36:27 against Firmus AZS Politechnika Koszalinska), IUVENTA Michalovce (31:24 over RK GEN-I Zagorje) and Ipress Centre-Vac (25:18 against Succes Schoonmaak / VOC Amsterdam).

Seven second round ties will be played on the weekend 15-17 November, alongside four doubleheaders: Fram vs Köfem Sport Club, Elche C.F.-Mustang vs HB Dudelange, HC Zito Prilep vs Frisch Auf Göppingen and WHC Radnicki Kragujevac vs Team Esbjerg.
