Last 11 qualify for the Last 16

With five teams having secured the Last 16 berth in the Women's EHF Cup last weekend, 11 more teams followed this weekend to make the next round complete. The draw of the Last 16 will take place on Tuesday, 19 November at 11:00 hrs at the EHF Office in Vienna.

The first leg of the Last 16 is scheduled for 1-2 February, the second leg will follow one week later.

Four of the 11 teams qualified from double-headers, of which only one was close. That was the tie in the Sport Center Mladost “Jazero” in Kragujevac, where Serbian WHC Radnicki Kragujevac and Danish Team Esbjerg met. After a Danish 28:24 win Saturday, a 26:26 draw Sunday was more than enough for the Danish to stay in the tournament.

“It was two working results, in which eight players got almost full playing time. Radnicki is definitely a qualified team to play against, and they really put us to the test. Radnicki played even better than I had expected,” Team Esbjerg coach Lars Frederiksen told Esbjerg's website.

DHK Banik Most, who won the Challenge Cup last season, were balancing on the edge of an exit from the EHF Cup after a clear 21:28 away defeat last weekend to HC Zalau, who reached the semi-final of the EHF Cup last season.

However, the Black Angels from the Czech Republic managed to turn the tie in front of 1,250 spectators in the Sportovni hala Banik Most. Already at half time, the Czechs were leading no less than 17:7, and although the Romanians managed to climb back and to force a penalty throws shoot-out with a full-time result 28:21, all Most players showed a perfect efficiency in the thriller, while their goalkeeper Dominika Müllnerova saved the last Romanian attempt.

To IUVENTA Michalovce, a seven-goal lead from the first leg turned out to be enough – but only just – as the Slovakian champions visited RK GEN-I Zagorje. The Slovenian team won 27:21, but as Michalovce had won 31:24 at home, they went to the next round with 52:51 on aggregate.

Former Champions League finalists Lada were also defending a seven goal lead, as they visited Croatian ZRK Zamobor who reached the Challenge Cup final last season. The Russians had won 33:26 at home, but they never needed to lean on that lead, as they won by one goal more this time, 37:29 and reached the next round without any problems.
