14 goals from Augustesen bring København close to quarter-final

København Håndbold´s left winger Mie Augustesen had a great afternoon in the EWS Arena in Göppingen Sunday.

14 goals or more than a quarter of all the goals scored in the match did the Danish international score, as she and her teammates from København Håndbold defeated Frisch Auf Göppingen 25:22 in the first leg of the two teams' tie in the last 16.

The Danes were even leading by seven at half time, and the result obviously leaves them with fine chances to proceed to the quarter-final, when the German team visits Frederiksberg Hallen in Copenhagen next Sunday.

Another Danish team, Team Esbjerg, is in an even better position before receiving DHK Banik Most in Blue Water Dokken next Sunday.

No less than 28:21 did Esbjerg win the first leg away against the Black Angels from the Czech Republic Sunday evening.

The hosts were leading 12:11 at half time, but not even the support from the 1250 spectators in the Sportovni hala was enough to stop the visitors from dominating the second half completely.

“It should not cause us any problems to proceed in the tournament, and I really think we play a fine game against them. Actually, it is the best I have seen in a long time, and it is very positive that we managed to limit their score to 21 goals,” Esbjerg coach Lars Frederiksen told the Danish newspaper JyskeVestkysten.

While Denmark have good chances of having two teams in the quarter-finals, Russian handball is already sure of double representation among the eight quarter-finalists, as the two Russian teams in the Last 16 both went through without problems in this weekend's double headers.

Astrakhanochka had the least trouble as they eliminated Spanish Elche C.F. Mustang 73:44 on aggregate at home after winning 40:21 Saturday and 33:23 Sunday.

Lada were also in home court this weekend and sent another Spanish team, Rocasa Gran Canaria out with 56:44 on aggregate (30:28 and 26:16).

Romanian U Jolidon Cluj also seem to have clinched their quarter-final berth already after their 34:22 win in Turkey against Cankaya Bel. Anka Spor K Sunday, while the Hungarian tie between Fehévár KC and Ipress Center-Vac still appears to be open after Fehévár's narrow 22:19 home win Saturday.

The last two ties are to be decided as double headers this coming weekend: IUVENTA Michalovce (SVK) vs TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (GER) and Dinamo Volgograd (RUS) vs Skuru IK (SWE).
