Leverkusen in quarter-final through ”away” goals

Both legs of the Last 16 tie between IUVENTA Michalovce and Bayer 04 Leverkusen were played on the Slovakian team's home court in the Chemkostav Arena, but still Leverkusen made it to the quarter-finals through more away goals.

The first match Saturday was won 33:27 by Michalovce, but as the two teams met again Sunday in the very same hall, it was the Germans' turn to win by six goals. 24:18.

This obviously meant that the aggregate result was 51:51.

However, as the Sunday game was technically Leverkusen's home game, the Germans proceed to the quarter-final by having scored nine more goals in their away game than their opponents.

At half time in the second match, Michalovce were still heading for the quarter-finals, the score being 11:11, but in the last 30 minutes did Leverkusen manage to take a seven goal lead at 24:17, and the closing goal from Tetyana Trehubova was only cosmetic for the Slovakian team.

It was not nearly as dramatic in Blue Water Dokken in Esbjerg, where Team Esbjerg had no problems in defending their seven goal lead against DHK Banik Most.

The Black Angels from the Czech Republic, who won the Challenge Cup last season, did their best to catch up with the Danish 28:21 lead from the first leg, but Esbjerg controlled their return match all the way and won 28:26 which send them to the quarter-final with 56:47 on aggregate.

“This is just so cool. I think we can get far in this tournament,” Esbjerg's young left back Emily Baunsgaard told the newspaper Jydske Vestkysten.

Another Danish team, København Håndbold, did not have any problems securing the ticket for the quarter-final either.

Being up 25:22 after the away game against Frisch Auf Göppingen, the team from the Danish capital removed the last doubt already in the first half of the return match in Frederiksberg Hallen, as they were leading 13:6 at half time.

At the end, København won 31:22, making their aggregate win amount to 56:44.

The Hungarian meeting between Ipress Center-Vac and Fehérvár was considerably tighter.

Fehérvár only had a 22:19 lead from their home game, but as they managed to keep the away down to 25:24, they are still ready for the quarter-finals through a 46:44 aggregate win.

Romanian U Jolidon Cluj finished the job after won 34:22 away against Cankaya Bel. Anka Spor K. At home Cluj defeated the Turks 32:23 and proceed to the quarter-final with 66:55 on aggregate.

Already last weekend, Lada and Astrakhanochka qualified for the quarter-final, and this weekend Dinamo Volgograd made the Russian trio complete, as they won the double header against Swedish Skuru IK 52:43 (29:22 and 23:21).
