MATCH PREVIEW: In the Women's EHF Cup Lada Togliatti take on Team Esbjerg, who already eliminated another Russian powerhouse Dinamo Volgograd on the way to the final.

Experienced Russians against Danish final debutants

It will be two teams with very different European histories who meet in the first leg of the Women´s EHF Cup final in Togliatti Sunday afternoon.

Lada, who have the home right in the first match, are in their sixth European final in 13 years, if we count the Champions Trophy finals in 2002 and 2007.

To the visitors, Team Esbjerg, it will be their first appearance in a European Cup final in history.

When it comes to a history in European women's handball, Lada have considerably more experience than Team Esbjerg who will be visiting the Sportkomplex USK “Olimp” in Togliatti Sunday in the late afternoon for the first leg of the EHF Cup final.

Finalist in the Women's EHF Champions League in the 2006/07 season. Trophy holders of the Cup Winners' Cup in the 2001/02 season. Winners of the EHF Cup in the 2011/12 season.

That is the record list of Lada, when it comes to European finals, and if we add the Champions Trophy finals in 2002 and 2007, the tie against Team Esbjerg will be the Russian club's sixth final in a European competition.

Lada's Danish opponents Team Esbjerg cannot compete with that record list at all. As a matter of fact, this will be the Danish team's first European final ever.

However, the team from Denmark's fifth largest city has proved before in this season that they are hard to impress, and that the pressure on the European scene is not really a problem for them despite being new in the international top.

A 50-50 game

When Team Esbjerg drew another Russian team, Dinamo Volgograd in the quarter-final, Esbjerg coach Lars Frederiksen claimed that Volgograd was the strongest team in the tournament.

Still, his team defeated Volgograd 66:63 on aggregate after an impressive 36:27 win at home in the second leg.

So if Lars Frederiksen sticks to his opinion about Volgograd being the strongest opponent, he should be pretty optimistic ahead of the meeting with Lada.

“I would prefer playing Lada rather than Volgograd any time, but I base that point of view primarily on the results in the Russian league, where Volgograd have more or less swept all opposition aside.

“However, our nine-goal win against Volgograd was probably not a performance we make every day either, and I would consider our match against Lada as 50-50 game, when it comes to the winning chances.

“I would not go as far as to say that we are favourites. We are not capable of that yet,” Lars Frederiksen told eurohandball.com.
