15 teams chasing Lada's title

Last season, Handball Club Lada won the Women's EHF Cup. That will not be the case this year, as the Russian team was sent out in the only double-header last weekend in the Last 16. 2013 winners Team Tvis Holstebro won by five goals on aggregate in two away matches, which means that a new winner of the tournament will have to be found among the 15 remaining teams in the competition.

One candidate could be Team Esbjerg who lost the final against Lada last season. The current number one in the Danish league are at least extremely close to the quarter-final, being eight goals up before their home game in the Scandinavian derby against last year's Challenge Cup winners H 65 Höör's Handbollsklubb. Esbjerg won the first leg in Sweden 33:25, and that result almost makes the return match in Esbjerg Sunday afternoon look like a formality.

The fact that Lada are out of the tournament does not mean that Russian handball does not still have good chances in the tournament.

Astrakhanochka are travelling to Romania with an 11-goal lead after a 36:25 home win against ASC Corona 2010 Brasov, while Rostov-Don also stand with very good quarter-final hopes. The team under Danish coach Jan Leslie are leading 28:19 before going to Hungary for the Saturday meeting with Dunaujvarosi Kohasz Kezilabda Akademia.

Germany is sure to be represented in the quarter-finals, the only question is by which team. The German derby between Buxtehuder SV and TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen-Werkselfen seems pretty open, Buxtehude chasing a 31:29 deficit before the home game Saturday afternoon.

Two quarter-final berths will be decided in double-headers this weekend. In Hungary, ÉRD HC are taking on Rocasa Gran Canaria ACE from Spain, while last season's losing Challenge Cup finalists Issy Paris Hand are receiving Romanian visitors this weekend. The French ladies are hosting H.C. Dunarea Braila with the first leg Saturday evening and the return match Sunday afternoon.
