REVIEW: Hungary cruise to a 33:20 away win against Austria in their first leg of the World Championship Play-offs on Friday night

Hungary have more than one foot in the door to Denmark 2015

Hungary are almost certainly qualified for the Women's World Championship 2015 in Denmark after defeating Austria in convincing fashion 33:20 away at Stockerau in the first leg of the two countries' play-off tie on Friday.

Austria opened the scoreboard, but the 1:0 was the only lead the hosts would enjoy this night.

Head coach Herbert Müller's pre-match claim that his side would not be able to afford many technical mistakes if they were to stand a chance very quickly vanished into thin air.

Quite to the contrary Austria committed 15 technical mistakes overall, 12 alone in the first half. Many of them were exploited by Hungary, and at the break the score stood at 19:11 in favour of the visitors.

In the second half Hungary powered on and at times enjoyed a 16-goal lead before the Austrians managed to limit the defeat to 13 goals which, nevertheless, makes a comeback in the return match in Györ next Saturday look almost impossible.

“We did not stand a chance today, and unfortunately we missed too many opportunities, be it penalty shots or open shots. You cannot afford this against a team like Hungary, but we still have some things we can consider during the coming week in order not to appear like a mouse in front of a snake,” said Herbert Müller after the match.

Left wing Ildiko Erdösi was the match's top scorer with seven goals for Hungary, while her teammate Zita Szucsanszki scored six goals from six attempts.

Left back Laura Magelinskas scored five goals for Austria, just like centre back Kristina Logvin, the daughter of former top international top player Tatjana Logvin.
