Stars raring to go as season start edges ever closer

Teams target specific areas for improvement as they replace gym workouts with tactical awareness and ball exercise. After initial weeks of packing brawn, it is time to add some brains and finesse to the equation.

However, they are still a few weeks off from the puzzle being complete and the teams deemed ready to step onto the court for their European campaigns in September.

With both men’s and women’s teams in the EHF Champions League significantly strengthened over the summer period, their respective coaches will do everything in their power to ensure their prized acquisitions are in top form and have bedded well come the season opening.

Feel the ball

Paris Saint-Germain stars got a chance to “feel the ball” in training after a while. Upon lifting heavy in the initial weeks of pre-season period, it is always a bit of a challenge transferring focus from all-out strength to the finesse of ball exercise – even for the best. Moreover, “Les Parisiens” goalkeeper Patrice Annonay was as nimble as ever to make the task even more challenging for his teammates.

Business as usual in Kiel

It is not uncommon for the training sessions of the top team to stretch well beyond the standard 90-minute mark. Regardless of their immaculate physical shape, the players of THW Kiel brought hard work to another level, with a two-hour and 40 minutes of gruelling gym work. However, right back Marko Vujin admits it is a “quite normal” training routine for the three-time VELUX EHF Champions League winners.

However, their intense preparations were not enough to help them survive three matches in 26 hours at the Sparkassen Cup, the final of which was a repeat of last season’s semi-final clash between Kiel and Veszprem.

Once again it was the Hungarians who prevailed, but by a much wider margin this time around, a convincing 32:19 scoreline is certain to give their confidence a massive boost ahead of the sides’ VELUX EHF Champions League Group Phase clash in October.

Spirited CSM Bucuresti teambuilding ahead of debut season

Life is beautiful at the Women’s EHF Champions League Group D outfit CSM Bucuresti. The newcomers among the Europe’s elite are enjoying their summer preparation, entering the competition with high hopes.

With the difficult challenges such are the IK Savehof, MKS Selgros Lublin and the reigning champions Buducnost awaiting in the group, the ambitious Romanian top-flight showed excellent team spirit will be their forte this season, with an interesting teambuilding video.

Meanwhile, last season’s runners up Larvik are already playing matches. They were in Kristiansand for a pre-season tournament and Thea Mork took a break from training to show off he gymnastic skills with some very unorthodox equipment.

No rest for title-holders Barca

Not time to rest for the nine-time champions FC Barcelona, as their training camp in Andorra was completed. Last day of the camp was an opportunity for Barca stars to try other stuff, while maintaining their fitness ahead of Palau Blaugrana return. Five-a-side football and basketball exercises were on display as well as with the ball they’re most suited to playing with.

Barcelona will head for Germany on Wednesday for their first taste of match practice and it will be in the form of matches against Leipzig and THW Kiel in quick succession.
