Leipzig celebrate extension of coach's contract with big wins

Last Thursday, HC Leipzig coach Norman Rentsch extended his contract with the club's women's team until the summer of 2019.

The same evening, his team celebrated the extension by defeating RK Zagorje 26:17 in the first leg of the double-header against the Croatian team in the Women's EHF Cup this weekend.

Two days later, Leipzig made their Last 16 berth complete through a further nine-goal win, this time 34:25 in front of 1,768 spectators in the Arena Leipzig, after the first match had been played in Dessau.

Silkeborg-Voel KFUM may be debutants in Europe, but that did not stop the Danish team from taking two big wins in their first European matches ever.

In this weekend's double-header, the Swiss visitors SPONO Eagles were beaten 33:20 Friday and 34:22 Saturday.

“This is big for the club. It is big for the girls. We are on to the next round of the tournament, and that is what counts. Now, we are excited who we are going to meet next,” head coach Jakob Andreasen told Silkeborg-Voel's website after the two big wins.

H 65 Höörs Handbollsklubb were one goal down against Nantes Loire Atlantique HB after their visit to France last weekend, where the Swedish team lost 27:26.

However, Höör, who won the Challenge Cup in 2014, turned the tables at home in Björvikshallen Saturday and a 30:27 win was enough to send them to the Last 16.

“We performed a very good team effort, we were cool in the defence and well prepared, and we managed to stay focused,” left back Anna Olsson explained to Höör's website.

Although Nantes were sent out, France will still be represented in the Last 16.

HBC Nimes booked a huge aggregate win in this weekend's double-header in Belgium against Hubo Initia Hasselt.

Already in the first leg, the French ladies removed any doubt about the final outcome by winning as big as 39:18.

After that demonstration of power, a considerably more modest 28:26 the following day was more than enough for Nimes to clinch their Last 16 berth.
