ROUND REVIEW: Dunaujvarosi close a three-goal deficit in double header against Astrakhanochka to reach the Women’s EHF Cup Semi-finals alongside Brasov, Randers and Metzingen.

Four teams book tickets to semi-finals

This weekend’s double header in the quarter-finals of the Women’s EHF Cup was a close affair.

Russian side Astrakhanochka visited Hungarian Dunaujvarosi Kohasz Kezilabda Akademia, and the first match ended in favour of the visitors.

Their 20-year-old right wing Anna Vyakireva was particularly successful, contributing 10 goals as Astrakhanochka won 26:23 after leading 15:12 at half time.

But the Hungarian hosts took their revenge in the second leg Sunday. For most of the match Dunaujvarosi were leading by at least the three goals that haunted them from the first leg. And after holding a 12:9 lead at half time, they celebrated their semi-final berth with a 25:20 win.

Left back Krisztina Triscsuk played her part in the Hungarian win with eight goals, and her side now prepare for their semi-final opponent: Randers HK.

The Danish team took a relatively narrow 30:27 lead with them to Sweden for the second leg of the Scandinavian derby with H 65 Höörs Handbollsklubb. But Randers did not have any real problems in the return match in Björkvikshallen.

The home team were initially leading 5:4, but by half-time Randers had claimed a decisive 13:10 advantage, and that lead increased to 16:10 at the start of the second half.

The home team managed to reduce to 18:19, but they were never able to create real doubt about the result, and the visitors increased the distance again toward the end of the match.

“We got Höör’s passes to their line players under control, we were in position in our defence early and we were good at containing their shooters,” Randers’s Swedish left back Johanna Westberg told the official website of the Swedish Handball Federation.

Danish international Camilla Dalby scored eight goals for Randers, while left wing Marie Wall scored six for Höör.

The return match of the German pairing HC Leipzig and TuS Metzingen was almost as close as the first meeting between the number one and number three sides in the Bundesliga.

Third-placed Metzingen brought a 25:24 lead with them to the second leg, which they led almost all the way.

At half-time, the visitors were in front by two goals at 12:10, and although Leipzig equalised a couple of time after the break, the 1581 spectators in Anhalt-Arena, Dessau watched Metzingen win 27:25 and qualify for the semi-final.

Norwegian left back Tonje Loseth scored seven goals for Metzingen, while Leipzig’s top scoring player was left back Saskia Lang, who contributed six.

Metzingen’s opponents in the semi-final will be ASC Corona 2010 Brasov from Romania.

The Romanian team was very close to the semi-final after their first match away against HC Odense, whom they defeated as clearly as 29:21. Brasov could therefore afford a 21:21 draw at home in the return match.

Left back Line Haugsted, who will be leaving for Viborg HK after this season, scored nine times for Odense, and her left back counterpart, Florina Zamfir, scored six for Brasov.
