Three European clubs vie for the IHF Super Globe 2016

No less than three European teams will join the race for the IHF Super Globe trophy this coming September as they will face continental champions of Asia, Africa, Pan America, Australia and the tournament’s hosts.

The reigning VELUX EHF Champions League winners Vive Tauron Kielce from Poland and the last year’s Super Globe winners Füchse Berlin from Germany who start in the Men’s EHF Cup this season will be accompanied by Paris Saint-Germain Handball as the third team of the last VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne has received a wild card from the tournament’s organisers.

After Berlin eliminated Barcelona in the semi-final last year, they also beat Hungarian champions Veszprem 28:27 after extra-time to claim their only second international trophy after the Men’s EHF Cup in 2015.

Barcelona won the previous two Super Globe's editions in 2013 and 2014 underlining a dominance of Spanish clubs in the tournament's history. Ciudad Real/Atletico Madrid claimed the trophy three times (2007, 2010, 2012) and CB Cantabria once (1997). THW Kiel succeeded in 2011 and Al Sadd triumphed in 2002 as the only non-European club so far.

All Sadd will be hosting the event this year again. The tournament will take place from 5–8 September 2016 in Duhail Sports Hall in Doha, Qatar, and will be played in a knock-out round starting with the quarter-finals.
