NEWS REPORT: Less than two months out of the start of the EHF EURO 2018 Qualification, 35-year-old former Icelandic international Kristján Andrésson has been appointed new coach of Sweden's men's national team

Icelandic Andrésson follows Olsson and Lindgren as Swedish head coach

The former Icelandic international Kristján Andrésson will in charge of Sweden's men's national team when it takes to the court at the Men's EHF EURO 2018 Qualification in early November.

The 35-year-old, who played 13 internationals for Iceland, had so far been coaching Swedish league team Eskilstuna Guif with which he reached the group phase of the Men's EHF Cup in the 2012/13 season.

He is replacing the coaching duo Staffan Olsson and Ola Lindgren who stepped down after Rio 2016 Olympic Games after they had been in charge for eight years.

"First of all, it's very flattering to be offered the job. It's going to be very interesting to work with the national team, but it is obviously also a big challenge to form a winning team out of the short periods of time we can have the players over a year," said Andrésson on Tuesday.

"There are enough of fine Swedish handball players, though, and I'm going to do my best to make them perform at qualification tournaments and at championships."

Andrésson's first assignment courtside with the national team will be the EHF EURO 2018 Qualification match at home against Montenegro on 3 November.
