History-makers Buducnost now all-time top points scorers in Women’s EHF Champions League

Montenegrin side Buducnost took their second win in succession after a seven goal win (30:23) in Norway, against Glassverket, while Metz Handball got their first champions league points of the season by defeating Thüringer HC 25:18.

  • Buducnost’s win took them top of the all-time standing in the Women’s EHF Champions League with 253 points
  • Glassverket played a Women’s EHF Champions League group match at home for the first time in history
  • Metz and Thüringer HC faced each other in the competition for the first time ever
  • Buducnost are now on top of the group with four points after two matches.

GROUP A

Glassverket (NOR) vs Buducnost (MNE) 23:30 (11:13)

For the first time in history Glassverket played an EHF Women’s Champions League group match at home, and for parts of the match, the Norwegian debutants managed to offer the all-conquering Buducnost fine resistance.

Buducnost had Cristina Neagu back from injury, while line player Dragana Cvijic missed out again but it only took Neagu 40 seconds to score her first Champions League goal of the season, as she gave the visitors a 1:0 lead.

Buducnost dominate, but have a scare

This was the starting signal to a beginning dominated by Buducnost who went ahead 3:0 and 4:1, yet Glassverket managed to come back, and through five goals in a row, the hosts lead 6:4.

For the rest of the first half, Glassverket managed to keep the game fairly equal, but after the break, Buducnost left no doubt who the winners would be

Second half wait

It took Glassverket until the 37th minute to score their first goal of the second half, and the guests made use of this to go 17:11 and never looked back even going 12 goals clear (30:22) shortly before the final buzzer.

Metz Handball (FRA) vs Thüringer HC (GER) 25:18 (11:10)

Before the match, Thüringer coach Herbert Müller stated that he saw his team as underdogs in this away game, but as we all know, however, underdogs can bite too, and this was what the German visitors did for great parts of the first half.

Even when Metz changed a 6:4 defeat into a 10:6 lead through six goals in a row, THC managed to come back and only be one goal down at half time.

Big Thüringer scoring problems

But if you only manage to score five goals in 20 minutes, as Thüringer did after the break, it is hard to win a handball game and courtesy of their strong defence, effective counter phase and fast established attacking play, Metz were able to increase their one goal lead from half time seven at the end to take their first win and go equal on two points with the Germans.
