Early top match in Magdeburg

After opening the group phase campaigns with wins, SC Magdeburg and Bjerringbro-Silkeborg are meeting in an early top match in Group A on Wednesday evening.

24 hours later, Lugi HF and Füchse Berlin are chasing their first group phase points in their internal meeting in Group B.

  • SC Magdeburg and Bjerringbro-Silkeborg are both chasing their second win in succession
  • Lugi HF and Füchse Berlin both started their group phase campaign with a defeat.
  • Magdeburg goalkeeper Jannick Green is playing against his former club, Bjerringbro-Silkeborg

Both teams started their group phase campaign with wins this weekend, but while Bjerringbro-Silkeborg booked a clear 27:19 win at home against TATRAN Presov, Magdeburg had to struggle to win 33:31 in Belarus against SKA Minsk.

Wednesday evening, the German and the Danish team are meeting in what already looks like a premature top clash in the group.

To Magdeburg goalkeeper Jannick Green, the match will be particularly special, as he was representing Bjerringbro-Silkeborg before joining Magdeburg in 2014.

“I obviously always want to play, but against Bjerringbro-Silkeborg in particular,” says the 29-year-old Danish international who is warning his teammates before the match against his former club.

“They form a complete team, with two, actually three, good line players, very good shooter, an experienced playmaker in Sebastian Skube and good goalkeepers. It would not be easy for us,” Green told Magdeburg's website.

GROUP B

Lugi HF (SWE) vs Füchse Berlin (GER)
Thursday 15 February 19.00 local time, live on ehftv.com

Both teams got off to a rather bad start with defeats in the opening matches in the group phase.

Lugi suffered a narrow 34:32 defeat to Helvetia Anaitasuna in Spain, while Füchse disappointed themselves and their fans by losing clearly 26:21 at home against Saint-Raphael Var Handball.

Therefore, it is likely to be two teams who are hungry for points who meet in Sparbanken Skåne Arena of Lund Thursday evening.

Füchse got a bit of revenge already Saturday by winning 25:19 away against Ludwigshafen in the Bundesliga.

“Our team is growing together, but I have been saying all the time that we need time. Now it is all about preparing for the match in Sweden,” said Füchse head coach Velimir Petkovic.
