13 European teams still in race for women’s under-18 world title

All pre-tournament favourites have made it safely through to the Last 16 of the Women’s Youth World Championship 2018 in Kielce, Poland.

Reigning Women’s 17 EHF EURO champions Germany and multiple under-18 world champions Denmark and Russia are among the 13 teams from Europe which have qualified from the group stage. They will be joined by Japan, South Korea and Tunisia for the first knockout round on Wednesday (15 August).

The Last 16 (playing schedule) will see Germany taking on Croatia, Denmark playing hosts Poland, and Russia meeting Tunisia. Also, South Korea are going head to head with Japan, guaranteeing at least one non-European contender in the quarter-finals.

The official tournament website offers livestreams of all matches.

Romania advanced as winners from Group A. After surprisingly dropping a point against Angola, they defeated Germany 20:17 in the last group match. Poland and Austria, who are replacing Brazil, also got through at the expense of Slovakia, which finished fifth.

Hungary cruised to victory in Group B, beating Denmark 28:25 in a duel for the top spot. Croatia and Sweden finished third and fourth, respectively, as Chile and Egypt bowed out.

Russia enjoyed a flawless campaign to finish top of Group C, ahead of Norway and the Netherlands. Japan in fourth became one of the three non-European teams to advance. Argentina and China failed to make the Last 16.

Asian under-18 champions South Korea had an impressive run to lead Group D, beating second-place France 45:39 in a remarkably high-scoring match. Spain and Tunisia took the remaining qualifying spots as fifth-ranked Montenegro came up just short, while Kazakhstan also went out.
