The winners of the contest will be those who answer the questions correctly in the shortest amount of time. Remember: one city – one contest. Winners of a contest in one Host City will not be eligible to win prizes in the remaining three contests.

KRAKOW
1. He was born in June 1838 in Krakow, as the ninth child in his family. He always remained closely tied to the Krak’s Town – he studied here at the Academy of Fine Arts, of which he was later, the director. Among his students were the great representatives of Young Poland – Józef Mehoffer, Stanisław Wyspiański and Maurycy Gottlieb. He is known as the most prominent painter in Polish history. Who is he?
2. Krakow is commonly known as the city of Polish kings. This is because in the past, the capital of the Małopolska was the site of coronations of Polish rulers, as well as the residence of the royal court. For over 500 years, Krakow was also the capital of the country. What year did the city lose its status to Warsaw?
3. During EHF EURO 2016, 19 matches will take place in Krakow. The Polish representation will face their opponents here; the city will also be the site of the final matches that will determine the top three teams of the tournament. The site of the matches will the TAURON Arena Krakow, which was opened for use in May 2014. The facility was built in a park. WROCŁAW
1. He was born in October 1921 in Radomsko, and from 1968, for over 40 years, he was connected with Wrocław. He lived and worked in the city. He was one of the most frequently translated Polish author – his books have been published in 49 languages. He debuted in 1944 with the volume Forest Echoes, in 1999 received the Nike Literary Award for the poetry tome Mother Departs. He died in April 2014 in Wrocław. Who is he?
2. Located in Wrocław’s Zalesie estate is the Olympic Stadium, which is the central part of a sports facilities complex. It was built in the 1920s. Despite its current name, it was suitable for events on a smaller scale than the Olympic Games. Currently, the stadium can accommodate approx. 11 thousand fans in its seats. Who was the architect who designed it?
3. Since 2005, small statues of dwarves have been appearing in Wrocław. Currently, they are an integral part of the urban space and one of the city’s attractions. Special tours that visit the dwarves are organised, during which tourists can combine sightseeing in Wrocław with a search for the figures. The dwarves are connected with a movement that originated in the 1980s. What is the name of the movement?
4. In May and June 2008, Wrocław was the host to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games qualification tournament. Besides the Polish team, three other national teams took part in the tournament. List the teams.

KATOWICE
1. In 1906, a world-famous physicist was born in Katowice, one of only two women who received the Nobel Prize in the discipline. When she was three years old, she and her family left Upper Silesia and moved to Göttingen, which she left in 1930 to move to the United States. In 1963, she received the Nobel Prize for proposing the nuclear shell model of the atomic nucleus. Who was she?
2. The coat of arms of the City of Katowice shows an anvil with a forging hammer, placed on a wooden beam. The background of the coat of arms is gold and blue. The second colour has a symbolic meaning. What is it?
3. In June 2012 in Katowice, the men’s handball Polish national team faced off with Lithuania in the qualification play-off for the 2013 World Championship in Spain. GDAŃSK
1. He was born in 1611 in Gdańsk in a family that had been brewers for generations. He, however, was interested in mathematics, astronomy and drawing. He studied in the Netherlands, England and France. From 1634 until the end of his life, he lived in Gdańsk again. He constructed and built many unique instruments for astronomical observation, known to us from illustrations in his works. He printed his works in his own printing house. He named one of the constellations he discovered the “Sobieski’s Shield”. Who was he?
2. ERGO ARENA will be one of the sites of the EHF EURO 2016. Group D teams – Denmark, Hungary, Russia and Montenegro – will play their matches here. The arena is located at the border of Gdańsk and Sopot. The site was officially opened during a friendly Poland-Brazil volleyball match. Since that event, just over five years have passed.
