2009 Champions Trophy events cancelled

At the end of the 2008/09 European Cup and EHF Champions League season, the winning teams of the three competitions in both the men’s and women’s category (EHF Champions League, EHF Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup) were awarded their titles and respectively their automatic entry to participate in the 2009 Champions Trophy Event.

It is with regret that the European Handball Federation has to announce that both the men’s and women’s edition of the 2009 Champions Trophy will not be carried out.

The fact that both competitions are cancelled this year sets a precedent in the history of the competition, one that the EHF considers truly unfortunate. For the first time in thirteen years, an edition of the men’s competition has been cancelled. In the women’s edition of the competition, unfortunately this is the second time a Champions Trophy event has not taken place since the competition shed its old identity as the “Super Cup” and re-launched under the Champions Trophy brand.

The competitions, that were scheduled to be played in September, were cancelled due to a high volume of competition and other events on the European handball calendar and the inability to secure TV coverage amongst other difficulties.

Therefore, the Executive Committee of the European Handball Federation were in agreement that the 2009 edition of the EHF Champions Trophy would be struck, on this occasion, from the handball calendar.

The EHF looks forward to completing the scheduled sporting programme that leads with the EHF Champions League and European Cup qualification matches beginning in September 2009.
