Last 16 at Women's Junior World Championship

 


The preliminary round at the Women's Junior World Championship is over and now the teams are heading to the Last 16. The best four teams of each group qualified for the next stage that will be played on Sunday 8th July.

 

Group A

 

Serbia did not lose a single match the preliminary round. They won their first match against Spain (25:22) and they continued winning against China (37:22), Uruguay (33:29) and Denmark (26:21). 

 

They lost one point when the played 18:18 against the Hungarian team. And the Hungarians secured the second place in Group A.

 

Hungary defeated the outsider Uruguay (37:22), the Spaniards (26:25) and the Chinese squad (36:18).

 

The third place goes to the Spanish team. They defeated the Danish team (25:24) who were their direct opponents for the third place.

 

Afterwards, Spain won against China (39:22) and Uruguay (29:19).

 

The final team to qualify for the Last 16 is Denmark. They could defeat China (29:19), Uruguay (24:12) and Hungary.

 

Uruguay is fifth in Group A after a victory against China (25:24) who is now sixth.

 

Group B

 

After a draw in the last game (25:25) between the defending champion Sweden and Korea, Korea wins Group B.

 

Korea defeated Congo (42:13) in the first game and they won the second match against the outsider Kazakhstan with 48:25. The Korean team could celebrate two further victories against the Czech Republic (25:21) and Argentina (34:29)

 

Sweden is second in the group. The defending champion, Sweden made it clear that they are in for the title. They won their first four matches against Argentina (19:18), Congo (29:21), they defeated the host (28:17) and Kazakhstan (41:26).

 

A draw against Korea was not enough for them to win the group.

 

The host (Czech Republic) started with a very against Kazakhstan (32:22). Afterwards, they won match against Argentina (22:15) and Congo (27:18).

 

They lost against the first and the second of the group, Korea and Sweden.

 

Congo is the last team to qualify for the Last 16. They won 36:31 against the outsider Kazakhstan and against Argentina (34:32).

 

Argentina won the match between the two losers of Group B (31:26 against Kazakhstan) and are now fifth in Group B whereas Kazakhstan is sixth.

 

Group C

 

Russia is, after five victories in five matches, the clear winner of Group C.

 

They defeated all their opponents: Japan (28:26), Poland (34:27), France (22:21), Angola (37:28) and Austria (33:28).

 

The second place goes to the French team. 

 

They won against Angola (33:15), Japan (38:25) and Poland (25:24).

 

However the French lost their match agains the winner of the group, Russia, and divided points with Austria (18:18).

 

Austria makes it to the third place. The Austrian squad celebrated a victory against Poland (37:29), Angola (30:20) and Japan (35:27).

 

The fourth place goes to Poland. The defeated the Japanese (34:21) and Angola (27:20) who are now fifth after a victory against Japan (30:27).

 

Group D 

 

In Group D, Brazil won four matches out of five and is the clear winner of the group.

 

They surprisingly defeated the Dutch team on the first day (32:29), they won against Romania (24:22), against Norway (23:21), Tunisia (32:22).

 

But on the last day, they lost against the Croatian team (33:22).

 

The second place in this group goes to Norway. They started with a victory against Croatia (22:21).

 

The next games were not as successful as the first for the Norwegian squad. After a draw against the Dutch team (22:22), they lost against Brazil.

 

On the fourth day, Norway won a thrilling match against Romania (24:23) and on the last day, they clearly defeated Tunisia (34:19).

 

Romania is the third team to secure its tickets for the Last 16.

 

A victory against Tunisia (37:28), Croatia (23:19) and the Netherlands (22:20) were enough to qualify.

 

The last team from Group D that makes it to the Last 16 is Croatia. They won against Tunisia (33:20) and made a draw against the Dutch team (28:28).

 

On the last day of the preliminary round, they won against the group leader Brazil. The fifth place in the group goes to the Netherlands who won against the sixth, Tunisia (41:24).

The best 16 qualified for the Last 16.

 

The matches will be played on Sunday 8 July 2012.

President's Cup

 

The teams that did not qualify for the Last 16 are now playing President's Cup.

 

The matches will be played on Sunday 8th July.

 

Uruguay vs. Argentina

China vs. Kazakhstan

Angola vs. Netherlands

Tunisia vs. Japan
