Women´s EHF Cup Round 2 preview
The Women´s EHF Cup will start its 20th edition during the upcoming weekend as 22 teams are on the starting grid of Round 2. First leg will be played over 12-14 October, the second leg one week later.
The winners proceed to Round 3 where they join 20 seeded teams. The first leg is scheduled for 10/11 November, the second leg fixtures will be played one week later.
The reigning trophy holders from HC Lada Togliatti are among the seeded teams for the Round 3 ready to defend the title what they also proved on Wednesday by beating the Women´s EHF Champions League participants Zvezda Zvenigorod in the Russian league 31:27.
After Hungarian side DVSC Debrecen lifted the trophy twice in a row (1995 and 1996), no other team managed to repeat the success in the following year. Lada will start their attempt in November against the winner of the double match between Italian HC Sassari and Bnei Hertzeliya from Israel.
Aside the team of the former coach of the Russian national team Yevgeni Trefilov there are more hot contenders for the trophy – the last season´s runners-up HC Zalau from Romania, the Spanish champions and the winners of 2009 edition from Grupo Asfi Itxako Navarra, Danish winners of the 2011 Women´s EHF Cup from FC Midtjylland Handball, or the French side HAC Havre which won the Women's EHF Challenge Cup last season.
There were originally 44 participants of the Women´s EHF Cup in total, but the Italian club D'Archivio Arche-Artro Teramo has withdrawn from the competition and their opponents Helvetia Bm. Alcobendas from Spain were given bye in the Round 3 where they will meet FC Midtjylland.
