The hosts' women's team and the defending champions' men start in convincing fashion

The 2013 European Beach Handball Championships threw off in Randers on 9 July with great weather and a frenetic crowd contributing to a fantastic start of the tournament.

In the women's event the Danish hosts made a perfect start, winning their matches against Switzerland and Turkey in very convincing fashion without giving away a single set.

Even though it was only day one of the championships, the main court was already almost packed to the maximum with 1,750 people watching the Danish women's team's match against Turkey at 20:00 hrs.

The Danish men's faced some tougher opposition which they overcame in the first instance, when they beat Spain 2:1 after shoot-out, but which proved to be too strong in the second match with Russia beating the hosts 2:0.

It was the first time there was no seat left on the stands as 1,800 spectators followed this last match of the day.

The defending champions from Croatia showed no weaknesses on day one of the championships winning their matches against Sweden and Turkey 2:0.

They currently top group A ahead of Ukraine and Hungary that also won their two matches. In group B it were Russia and Norway who kept a clear record, winning two from two matches.

Hungary feel the boost from the YAC European Beach Handball Championships

In the women's event Hungary are aiming to follow in the footsteps of their successful women's 19 squad which claimed gold on 7 July at the Women's 19 European Beach Handball Championship.

With winning their two matches in group A, they made the first step towards the right direction. Ukraine also won two from two in the same group.

In group B Denmark sit on top followed by Italy and Spain. All three teams have won two matches and lost none.

The 2013 European Beach Handball Championship throws off in Randers, Denmark, from 9 to 14 July 2013.

Entry to the event area for spectators is free. There are no tickets necessary.

Defending champions in both the men's and the women's event are the teams from Croatia.
