The search for new EHF Cup winner begins

A new winner of the Women’s EHF Cup will be found this season. That is a fact already before Round 2 which starts over this weekend. As the last season’s winners, Team Tvis Holstebro failed to qualify for the EHF Champions League Group Matches, the Danish club will continue in the Cup Winners’ Cup this season.

In total, 42 teams will enter this season, 20 in the Round 2 and 22 in Round 3. The Women’s EHF Cup will be played in a traditional knockout format with first two rounds followed by the last 16 stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final scheduled for 3/4 May (first leg) and 10/11 May (second leg).

In two out of the ten ties of the Round 2 both matches will be played already over the first weekend, while the remaining ties will find their decision next weekend. Among those is the meeting between the winners of last season’s Challenge Cup winners, DHK Baník Most from the Czech Republic and Norwegian Levanger HK, where The Black Angels of Most are going to try and continue their success from the Challenge Cup when taking on Scandinavia’s only representative in this round.

Croatian Liones from Samobor, whom Most defeated in the Challenge Cup final last May, are also to be found in the EHF Cup this season, but their Round 2 encounter with DHW Antwerpen is waiting till next weekend, when the Belgians are coming to Croatia to play both matches.

The winner of the meeting between Liones and Antwerpen can look forward to meeting an opponent with a rather famous name in Round 3, as Lada from Russia, who have often made their mark in the Champions League in the past, will be waiting. The team from Togliatti still have fresh memories of holding the EHF Cup trophy in 2012.

The winner of the tie between Most and Levanger will be facing Romanian HC Zalău who reached the semi-final of the tournament last season.
