Esbjerg on mission almost impossible

MATCH PREVIEW: Spirits are high in the Danes’ camp, as they prepare to hunt down a huge Lada lead

Esbjerg on mission almost impossible

It looks like Mission Impossible for Team Esbjerg , when the Danish team attempt to catch up with Lada´s 11-goal lead from the first leg of the Women´s EHF Cup Final.

Nevertheless, Esbjerg still believe in their chance to take their first European Cup title and to rob Lada of their second triumph.

It is not unprecedented in the history of the European Cup competitions for a team catch up with a deficit as large as, or even larger than, the 11 goals Lada hold over against Esbjerg ahead of the their second meeting in the EHF Cup Final.

Therefore, the Danish clubs has not lost all hope to turn things around in Blue Water Dokken in Esbjerg on Sunday afternoon.

The large difference between the two teams was created in the first half of the first match in Togliatti. Lada won those first 30 minutes 17:6, and maintained the lead, as the second half ended 19:19.

“We have seen a big difference between Russian teams´ performances at home and away before. We saw it most recently in our quarter-final, when we lost by six goals away to (Dinamo) Volgograd, but won by nine at home,” Esbjerg coach Lars Frederiksen told eurohandball.com.

“Furthermore, the long journey will have to be taken into consideration. A 18-19 hour trip is tiring, and the physical aftermaths of such a journey can mean a difference of 16-17 goals between a home and an away match.

“Obviously, there will still be a gap up to 22 –goal turnaround we need, but it is a positive thing that I have a team consisting of young and optimistic girls who only know one way, and that way is forward,” added Frederiksen.

The game can be followed live on ehfTV.com this Sunday afternoon at 16:40 local time.
