EHF Executive meets at EHF EURO 2012 

 

The European Handball Federation met on 27 January 2012 in Belgrade ahead of the closing stages of the Men’s EHF European Championship.

The Executive dealt with a range of issues including reports from the Commissions and EHFM, as well as the follow up from 20th Anniversary HeartBeat HandBall event, and related events such as workshops, Conference of Presidents, Conference for Secretaries General and Scientific Conference.

A main topic for discussion was the EHF Congress, which will take place in Monaco on 22 and 23 June 2012. As previously reported, EHF President, Tor Lian, confirmed that he would not be standing for a further term of office, and Vice President, Jean Brihault, announced his intention to stand for the office of President.

Motions to Congress

The Executive approved a number of motions from the President’s Conference, which took place in Vienna on 17 November 2011, as part of the 20 Year Anniversary celebrations of the federation, and will now be carried forward to the Congress for approval.

These motions included the formation of a Women’s Handball Board and the approval of the regulations for a European level anti-doping unit. The Congress will decide whether this new initiative should be incorporated into the EHF statutes.

Qualification for EHF EURO 2014 in Denmark

The Executive approved a revised system for the final qualification place to the Men’s EHF EURO 2014 in Denmark, given that the winner of EHF EURO 2012 will no longer qualify directly for the event. It was agreed that as well as the first two placed teams in the seven qualification groups, the best ranked third team from the seven groups will qualify for the event directly.

New qualification system for EHF EURO 2016

A new qualification system for EHF EURO 2016, which will enable lower ranked handball nations to play more international games, was agreed. This new system will be in place already from autumn 2012, and will be played parallel to the qualification process for the 2014 Men’s EHF European Championship in Denmark. Further information will be announced in due course.

New ‘EHF Cup’

The new Men’s ‘EHF Cup’ formed from the existing EHF Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup to be introduced from the start of the 2012/13 season with group matches was discussed. The official name of the competition, ‘EHF Cup’ was agreed and the basic regulations surrounding TV and marketing were approved.

EHF Champions League  (Men & Women)

New logos and corporate identity for the EHF Women’s Champions League and the VELUX EHF Champions League were approved by the Executive. The new look for the EHF’s flagship club competitions will be presented at the VELUX EHF FINAL4 and officially launched in the summer of 2012, ahead of the new season.

Finances

The EHF Executive approved the financial report of the treasurer and office for 2011, which will now be followed for approval up by external auditors and EHF Comptrollers.

Beach Handball – competitions awarded

The European Beach Tour (EBT) Masters, which will take place on 2/3 June 2012 will take place in Lagoa, Portugal.

The 2013 editions of the Men’s, Women’s and Younger Age Category European Beach Handball Championships were awarded to Denmark, and will take place in Randers, during the period 5 to 14 July 2013.
