Andrea Lekic

"The most demanding part of being a top player is being disciplined. I would say that we are going and we are facing a lot of challenges throughout our careers but discipline is the thing that really, let’s say, pushes us to show up, constantly, no matter the circumstances, no matter the troubles that you’re facing. I think that discipline is the key. Motivation is a present — one day motivation can be really high, another can be really low. But the moment when you are showing yourself, even when you don’t want, and being present in situations which are really not easy to handle are just making a huge difference — are you going to be a top, successful player or not?"

Why Andrea as a role model?

2013 IHF World Player of the Year Andrea Lekic’s individual impact on the game and longevity in career place her as one of the greatest. Lekic ended her on-court career with the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, following 18 seasons in the EHF Champions League. In those 18 seasons, she scored 1,073 goals, making her one of just four female players in the “club of 1,000.”

Lekic won the EHF Champions League in 2013, playing for Györ, and reached the final another four times. 2013 was a great year for Lekic, as it was also when she celebrated the silver medal at the World Championship — one of just two medals in the Serbia women’s team’s record.

On an individual level, along with being named World Player of the Year for 2013, she was All-star centre back of the EHF EURO 2012, where Serbia placed fourth.

Not exactly away from the court, but separate from her playing career, Lekic founded her own children’s handball academy, which has seen great success since its launch in 2013. She is also a part of the EHF's Respect Your Talent programme for young players as an ambassador. The fact she found helping the youngest in the game the most beautiful part of the sport reflects her fit as a role model.
