Katrine Lunde

"My best advice that I got in my career, I got from my coach Mats Olsson, or at least it is the advice that I have been using most, and I have been thinking about it a lot: It is that nobody should decide over your career. Nobody should decide when you should stop — that’s always something that is coming up in my case, because I’m getting more experienced! Not older, but more experienced! So, like, so many times during every year, I get the same question and, of course, it’s like, yes, maybe they don’t have any better questions, the journalists, but it can also be frustrating for a player to listen to. Okay, maybe they just expect me to stop? Is this what I should do? Am I not allowed to play handball any more if I get older? So, for me, he said: “Nobody should decide, you should decide yourself, and you feel finished, you stop. Don’t do it because somebody else expects it or wants you to do it, or whatever, so just trust yourself on this topic.”

Why Katrine as a role model?

If the term “legend” could be used for only one player in handball, Katrine Lunde would be the one to earn it. The most titled player in the sport, Lunde has won every major title more than once — the Olympic Games three times, the World Championship twice and the EHF EURO and EHF Champions League each seven times. On top of that, she has a collection of eight silver and bronze medals, as well as one EHF Cup title.

With exceptional longevity in her career, Lunde continues to define the game from her position as goalkeeper — her presence at the top stretches back more than two decades, and she is not done.

Along with the results achieved as part of her various teams, including the Norway national side and clubs with which she won the EHF Champions League, Lunde has earnt numerous individual accolades and been a multi-time All-star Team member at different competitions. Most recently, she was MVP of the 2024 Olympic Games and goalkeeper of the season at the EHF Excellence Awards 2024/25. She was also part of the EHF Excellence Awards Team of the Season in 2022/23, and was named MVP of that year as well.
