Women’s World Championship qualification draw

Phase 1 of the Women’s World Championship Qualification will be drawn in Vienna on 24 July 2012, following the completion of the EHF European Cup draw, which begins at 1100 hrs CET.

The 2013 Women’s World Championship will take place in Serbia from 7 to 22 December 2013.

A total of 32 national teams have entered from Europe, with total of 24 teams taking part in the final event. Europe has 10 slots reserved for qualifying teams. In addition, Serbia will qualify as hosts and Norway as reigning champions.

The two best ranked teams at EHF EURO 2012 will qualify directly. Eight teams will then go on to qualify through European Qualification Phases 1 and 2.

16 teams in Phase 1 - Qualification matches

A total of 16 teams will enter Qualification Phase 1, including; Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, Slovakia and Turkey. 

The qualification Europe for the 2013 Women’s World Championship will be played over three weeks in home and away matches. The following three periods are available for these matches: 

Rounds 1/2 
03 – 04.10.2012 and 06 – 07.10.2012

Rounds 3/4
21 – 22.11.2012 and 24 – 25.11.2012

Rounds 5/6
28 – 29.11.2012 and 01 – 02.12.2012

If all of the Member Federations of the teams in each group of phase 1 agree, the nations may decide to play their matches in the format of a tournament in one venue.

The period to play the matches in the format of a tournament in one venue is 28.11.2012 – 2.12.2012

The qualification matches will be played in 4 groups of 4 teams. The winner of each group qualifies for Phase 2 - play-off matches.

POT 1:  
6 teams - place 3 in 2012 EHF EURO Qual. and NED (in alphabetical order): AUT, BLR, NED, POL, POR, SVK, TUR

POT 2:   
7 teams - place 4 in 2012 EHF EURO Qual. (in alphabetical order): AZE, GBR, GRE, ITA, LTU, SLO, SUI

POT 3:  
2 teams - not qualified for 2012 EHF EURO Qual. Phase 2. (in alphabetical order): FIN, ISR

The ranking list is based on the results of the 2012 EHF EURO Qualification.

STEP 1:  2 teams of pot 3 drawn to row 4 (groups 1-4 will be drawn)
STEP 2:  2 teams of pot 2 drawn to row 4 (groups 1-4 will be drawn)
STEP 3:  4 teams of pot 2 drawn to row 3 (groups 1-4 will be drawn)
STEP 4:  1 team of pot 2 drawn to pot 1
STEP 5:  4 teams of pot 1 drawn to row 2 (groups 1-4 will be drawn)
STEP 6:  4 teams of pot 1 drawn to row 1 (groups 1-4 will be drawn)

Phase 2 – play-off matches

Apart from Serbia, Norway and the two top-ranked teams from EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia, all other teams participating at the EHF European Championship qualify directly for Phase 2 and the play-off matches.

12 teams from the following nations: Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Russia, Sweden and Ukraine.

The play-off matches will be played in a KO-system with first and second leg matches at two weekends. It will not be allowed to play home matches in the country of the opponent:

1 – 02.06.2013

Leg 2
08 – 09.06.2013

The winners of the play-off matches will qualify for the final tournament of the 2013 Women's World Championship in Serbia.

The draw of the play-off matches will take place on the final weekend of the Women’s 2012 EHF EURO in Belgrade/SRB on 16 December 2012.
