Even before a ball was thrown in the Last 16 of the Women’s EHF Cup, it was clear that Germany would be represented by one team in the quarter-finals, thanks to the meeting of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen-Werkelfen and Buxtehuder SV in an all-German tie.
After Leverkusen had won the first leg 31:29 at home, Buxtehude managed to turn the tables with home advantage on Saturday afternoon.
With the match all square at 16:16 at half-time, the 1,550 spectators saw Buxtehude open up an advantage in the last 30 minutes which they won be five goals, ending with a 34:29 win to send them to the quarter-finals.
2013 winners Team Tvis Holstebro were already in the quarter-final after eliminating Handball Club Lada in last weekend´s double-header, and this weekend it became clear that a further Danish team will joining them among the last eight.
Last season’s finalists Team Esbjerg are also ready for the next round after eliminating last year’s Challenge Cup winners H 65 Höörs Handbollsklubb 66:53 on aggregate.
Esbjerg followed last weekend´s 33:25 win in Sweden with a 33:28 win at home on Sunday.
Just like Denmark, Russia will also have double representation in the quarter-finals.
Having won 28:19 at home against Hungarian side Dunaujavarosi Kohasz Kezilabda Akademia in the first match, the Russian team under Danish head coach Jan Leslie also won the return match away, this time 29:28.
Astrakhanochka could live with a 26:22 away defeat to ASC Corona 2010 Brasov, having defeated their Romanian adversaries as clearly as 36:25 at home in the first match.
Hungary will still be represented in the quarter-finals, as ÉRD HC repeated their eight-goal win at home against Rocassa Gran Canaria from last weekend.
Having won 30:22 at home, ÈRD won the return match in Spain 31:23.
